Printer Resolution, A Breakdown Of Dots Per Inch

If you are seeking to achieve high quality photos, the most important step is to optimize your printer’s resolution. A digital camera's resolution refers to the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. Most professional photographers will set the resolution at 300dpi which stands for dots per inch. Some photographers may not like the size of the images and may set the resolution at 200dpi (dots per inch).

The higher the resolution, the crisper your print. 400 dpi (dots per inch) resolution is finer than a 300 dpi resolution. Keep in mind that resolution cannot accurately be compared between dye sublimation printers and inkjet or bubble jet printers — a dye sublimation print made at 400-plus dpi often looks as nice as a 1200 x 1200 dots per inch print made on an inkjet printer.

One of the things you might want to keep in mind while setting the resolution of your digital camera or printer, is that the dimensions should have a height, a width, and a resolution. The nice part about all this is, if you change the resolution on most printers, it will automatically adjust the width and the height of the image accordingly. For additional printer help you should refer to your digital camera's user manual.
